The Irish Offshore Operators’ Association (IOOA) has today welcomed the publication by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Alex White TD of the Government’s Energy White Paper.
Commenting on the publication, Professor Pat Shannon, Chairman of IOOA said,
“We welcome the recognition in the Government’s Energy White Paper of the important contribution of oil and gas to Ireland’s future energy mix and overall energy security with the potential to deliver significant and sustained benefits. There has been wide stakeholder consultation during the past year as the policy was developed, and it has clearly led to an ambitious energy strategy.
Oil and gas contribute significantly to the Irish economy, and hydrocarbons will continue to be an essential partner to other energy sources in the transition to a low carbon economy. In the light of the very strong industry interest in the latest offshore licensing round, it is timely to see the recognition of the potential of the development of Ireland’s indigenous offshore oil and gas resources. It is important that the Government encourages and stimulates efficient exploration and development of our natural resources in the Irish offshore in order to achieve greater energy independence and as an essential component of both Ireland’s and the EU’s energy security policy. We note the intention of Government to consult with shareholders in this regard in the future, and look forward to engaging in this process.”
